An event in association with the Drill Hall, Pace Health and London Lesbian and Gay Switchboard.
Gay and got issues? Then this may be the event for you.
Sunday 8th May 2011
- Why is it that gay men are statistically more likely to suffer from depression and to consider and even attempt suicide?
- Why is it that so many of us seem to believe that we are incapable of serious grown up romantic relationships?
- What is it about the gay experience that means we are more likely to have addiction issues with sex, drink and drugs?
These questions and more were raised in Attitude magazine's ground breaking Issues Issue which looked at the taboo subject of gay men and mental health in August 2010.
We will hear from editor Matthew Todd on why he produced the special edition of the magazine, from leading therapist David Smallwood, from Tim Franks of London gay mental health charity PACE and consider the pivotal book The Velvet Rage by US therapist Alan Downs. We will hear about the childhood trauma that gay people almost inevitably face as a result of growing up gay and in the closet, how our speakers believe that manifests itself in adult life and crucially, what those of us who have those problems can do to overcome them.
